Dreamworks' "MEGAMIND"

Today is the opening day for Dreamworks' "MEGAMIND". I worked on the film in the visual development stage for 10 months. Lots of fun working along side some of my favorite artists such as the insanely talented Production Designer of Kung Fu Panda, Ramone Zibach, Richard Daskas, Ruben Hickman, Craig Kellman, Tony Siruno, Sylvain Deboissy, Tim Lamb, Shane Prigmore and Shannon Tindle to name a few! Hope you all enjoy the film as much as I enjoyed working on it! You can also look at more great designs in the 'Art of Megamind'.

62nd Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards
Andy Bialk poses with Outstanding Individual Achievement In Animation award for 'The Ricky Gervais Show' in the press room during the 62nd Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards at Nokia Theatre LA Live on August 21, 2010 in Los Angeles, California.

Presenting the awards for this category were Seth Green and Erika Christensen. Such a fun night! I had the pleasure of meeting Ricky Gervais twice. Once in the fall of 2009 at the Wildbrain Animation Studio and the second time was last night at HBO's post Emmy party at the Pacific Design Center. He was so nice and told me he was a fan of my work! I told him I am a big fan of his and thanked him for the opportunity!!!

EMMY AWARD WINNING CHARACTER DESIGNS for HBO's "Ricky Gervais Show" season 1: Episode 3

Two weeks ago I received a call from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences informing me that I won the 2010 Primetime Emmy Award for "Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation" for Character Design on HBO's "Ricky Gervais Show". The Creative Arts Awards will be held this Sat, Aug21 @the Nokia Theater in downtown LA. It will be taped and an edited version will air on E! Friday, Aug27. I've posted some of the designs that were submitted to the judges. My job was made too easy by the director of Season 1, Craig Kellman who designed the 3 mains based on Ricky Gervais, Stephan Merchant, and Karl Pilkington as well as all the characters in Episode 1 setting the style for the rest of the show. There's absolutely no way I could have achieved this honor without him. Thank you Craig! And thanks to the other talented character designers, Pete Oswald, Hal Newman, Myke Chilian, Rob Lily, Robert Ryan Cory, and Steve Lambe who subsequently just won the Daytime Emmy Award for Character Design on Nickelodeon's "Fan Boy & Chum Chum".

Dreamworks' "Shrek Forever After"

When the Shrek 4 team asked me to help with designs for the "Pied Piper", I wasn't sure what to think. I've never drawn in the Shrek style and was concerned that my designs would not be well received. Fortunatlely, I was wrong. I've posted my final color version which was then put in the Shrek style by the talented Patrick Mate. Some of my preliminary sketches as well as loads of beautiful designs and paintings can be found in the Art of Shrek Forever After on Amazon. Many thanks to the director, Mike Mitchell, the production designer, Peter Zaslav, and Art Directors, Mike Hernandez and Max Boa for being so flexible and easy to work with. Click here to watch a featurette with the Pied Piper from "Shrek Forever After" and then go see the film!

Dreamworks "How To Train Your Dragon"

I am so fortunate to have worked on this film because it is a good one! My assignment was to provide alternative dragon concepts other than what the fabulous Nicolas Marlet had already accomplished. I knew trying to compete with Nico would be next to impossible, so I based my dragon designs on recognizable animals such as the giraffe. Some of these designs made it in the "Art Of How To Train Your Dragon" book now available on amazon. Next to Nico's designs, another favorite of mine is a 'chicken-legged dragon' designed by Tony Siruno also in the book.
Sony's "Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs" children's book

I was asked by the Production Designer, Justin Thompson of Sony's "Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs" to help out on a children's book based on the film. It's called "The Tasty Tale of Chewandswallow" and you can order it on amazon. The other artists on the project include the talented Pete Oswald and incredible Carey Yost who both character designed on the film.

Dreamworks "Monsters vs. Aliens Halloween Special: Mutant Pumpkins From Outer Space"

While at Dreamworks, I worked on a fun Halloween project which is very cool because it's one of my favorite times of the year! The stylish and talented art director, Patrick Hanenberger who also worked on the film, "Monsters vs Aliens", was a treat to work with. We arrived at the designs I've posted for all the Mutant Pumpkins. The special aired on NBC Oct 28, 2009. Here's a link with a great clip. Enjoy!

match.com "Better Together"

A good friend of mine asked me to take a pass at some designs on a project for match.com. He gave me some great reference and an animatic that has one the best songs I've heard this year! That's what really sold me and influenced my designs for this project. To see the final clip, click here.

Jimmy Kimmel Caricature

A friend of a friend recently asked me to do a caricature of Jimmy Kimmel and his entourage. This is the photo I worked from. He gave the drawing to Jimmy over the holidays and lo and behold it was well received! Thank goodness! Jimmy was very gracious! Read his letter to Danny for his reaction to the drawing!
Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa "Cast and Crew"
These scenes were taken from the making of footage originally shown on "HBO's First Look". The final has been edited down to 9:13 and is called "Cast and Crew" or "It's A Family Affair" and can be found on the DVD. Watching this again years later reminds me of how fun this movie is and how much fun I had working with a very talented group of artists!

Dreamworks "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa"
In the fall of 2005 I was asked to come aboard Dreamworks/PDI to begin character design for "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa". For the next year and a half I would be on a plane flying weekly from Burbank to San Jose working with some of the industry's most talented artists such as my production designer, Kendal Cronkhite. I could not have produced the work you see before you without her encouragement and support.
I was fortunate to have worked with 2 other characters designers on the film. They are Craig Kellman and Pete Oswald. Both incredibly talented and fun to be around!
